The Problem
Your swimmer is at practice before school. They do every set. They don't complain. And their best time is the same one they went last season.
Here's what's actually happening. At most club programs, one coach is watching thirty kids across six lanes. There's no time to break down an individual stroke, so the answer to a plateau is almost always the same: swim more. More yardage on top of mechanics nobody has corrected.
The water doesn't care how hard your kid is trying. It cares how they move through it. A swimmer with a broken pullout doesn't need another 2,000 yards — they need someone to watch the pullout.
Who's Coaching
Coming out of high school I was ranked outside the top thousand recruits in my class. I didn't take swimming seriously until my senior year. No Division I program called. I took a gap year just to get recruited at all, and ended up at a mid-major nobody was watching.
Five years later I was second in the country in the 100 breast and on the U.S. National Team. It wasn't more yardage that did it.
I'm still competing at the highest level right now — which means I'm coaching from inside the sport, not from memory. And I know exactly what it feels like to be the kid nobody's watching.
